Individuals responsible for the administration of workplacehealth and safety laws in government for the four Atlanticprovinces and the federal government are in Halifax this week toshare ideas, information and approaches. This is the 15th year for the annual meeting that, this year, will involve about 35 people. And if that canprevent just one similar injury from occurring, then it’s worthit,” said Environment and Labour Minister Kerry Morash. Some of the topics that will be discussed at this year’s meetinginclude reviews of some major files handled in each of thejurisdictions in the last year, recent developments in protectiveequipment in the areas of chain saw safety and fall protection, and standards for aviation maintenance. OTTAWA — A committee of MPs who conducted a probe into bus passenger safety in Canada has decided not to call for seat belts to be installed in Canadian school buses, urging instead the need for further study. The House of Commons transportation committee launched an investigation into bus safety, including school buses, following the deadly Humboldt Broncos crash in Saskatchewan that killed 16 people and injured 13 others. The committee’s final report included a number of recommendations to beef up safety requirements for passenger buses, including motor coaches and transit buses. But the committee says conflicting evidence from experts about seat belts on school buses points to the need for further study. The MPs say school bus seat belts are neither a panacea nor the only solution to increasing school bus safety while acknowledging they do prevent certain types of injuries.Gary Lillico, a school bus driver in British Columbia who has been pushing for seat belts in school buses, says he is disappointed MPs are pushing this aside despite the ample evidence they heard. The Canadian Press read more

OTTAWA — A federal department is redrawing the boundaries that determine how workers in different areas qualify for employment insurance.Changes to the 64 EI regions, as they’re known, would send political ripples through the country as some workers benefit while others find themselves with tougher hurdles to clear to get benefits.Documents obtained by The Canadian Press under the access-to-information law show how fraught the process can be, noting complaints that haven’t subsided after the last change five years ago.Employment and Social Development Canada is working on a fast-tracked review of the current boundaries that help decide the number of hours workers need to put in to qualify for EI benefits and how much they can receive depending on where they live in the country. How the department determines where to draw the lines separating EI zones will be different from previous reviews, with the internal documents detailing a plan to emphasize some factors over others, including putting less reliance on unemployment rates. If all goes according to plan, the department anticipates making recommendations by September 2020 — one year after this fall’s federal election. The Canadian Press read more
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) today launched a voluntary operation to repatriate Angolan refugees from Zambia – host to nearly half the total number of Angolan refugees in the region. Convoys from Zambia – home to some 200,000 Angolan refugees – will take returnees to parts of their homeland that meet certain pre-conditions, including a relatively low level of landmines and availability of basic services such as schools, health clinics and potable water. Many areas of Angola do not yet have good relocation conditions in place and UNHCR is working with the country’s Government and other partners to open up more areas for return in the coming months. “With the start of repatriation from Zambia, we now have in place four return routes to Angola,” UNHCR spokesperson Kris Janowski said in Geneva. “There are two return routes from the Democratic Republic of Congo – from the Bas Congo southwards into Mbanza Congo in northern Angola and from Katanga Province to Luau in north–eastern Angola. We opened up a third route from Namibia into the southern Angola province of Cuando Cubango.” Returnees will spend their first few days home at a reception centre where they will receive mine awareness training, HIV/AIDS information and medical assistance, where needed, UNHCR said. They will also receive a re-integration package with food rations, a construction kit to assist in building their homes, and basic household supplies. The government of Angola estimates that some 130,000 Angolans have returned home on their own since last year. read more
When Niagara welcomes the country’s next generation of elite athletes for the 2021 Canada Summer Games, Brock University will be buzzing.Held every four years, the Games are Canada’s largest multi-sport event, and when Niagara plays host in 2021, Brock will be a central hub for the region, including holding several athletic events and serving as the athletes’ village. As well, Brock President Gervan Fearon was appointed by the Government of Canada to sit on the board overseeing the 2021 Games, joining Brock senior official Tom Arkell on that panel. But the connection to the marquee event doesn’t end there. At the forefront of planning the mammoth undertaking is Brock alumna Erin Mathany (BSM ’05), who was recently named the Canada Games Council Vice-President, Marketing and Partnerships.Armed with 10 years of experience between the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and as the Director of Strategic Partnerships for the Canadian Olympic Committee, Mathany credits her success to the life-changing time spent in Brock’s Sports Management (SPMA) program.“I enjoyed my SPMA experience because I’m passionate about sport and it gave me the opportunity to learn from a business-oriented perspective while getting invaluable hands-on experience in the industry,” she said.“My early internships, mentorship under Professor Cheri Bradish and networking with other students exposed me to a lot of industry connections that helped me line up a job even before graduating.”Mathany is in good company. With more than 1,000 SPMA alumni out in the workforce, many hold high-profile roles in the Canadian sports industry, including:Kyle Dubas (BSM ’07), General Manager, Toronto Maple LeafsCorey Wray (BSM ’07), Assistant General Manager of the Toronto FCAndrew Tinnish (BRLS ’99, BSM ’01), Assistant General Manager, Toronto Blue JaysMathany shared advice for prospective SPMA students, urging more females to enrol rather than shy away.“Play your own game and don’t be intimidated if you don’t know all of the box scores,” she says. “I enjoyed the business of sports and that led me to pave my own path to success. You can do the same.”Inspired to give back to Brock, Mathany frequently returns to campus and takes great pride in her role on the board with the Brock University Alumni Association.“As a leader among the Brock alumni community, Erin is in a wonderful position to know and understand how best to tap into this community of leaders in Niagara and beyond,” said David Patterson, President and CEO of the Canada Games Council.Mathany believes the strength of Brock’s alumni will be crucial to the Games’ success. “I look forward to engaging Brock and SPMA alumni and volunteers to help the 2021 Canada Summer Games in Niagara come to life.”Opportunities for students to get involved in the Games will be developed by Brock and Niagara College, with internships, placements, co-op positions and jobs related to planning and hosting being made available through experiential programming. The Games, which began in 1967, will be divided into two, one-week competitions, with Brock hosting 2,400 athletes each week. The University will also host wrestling, swimming, mountain biking and other sports competitions.Brock will also house the Games’ provincial mission offices, transportation centre, administrative offices, polyclinic and information centre. To learn more about how to get involved, visit canadagames.ca/2021-canada-summer-games. read more

THE CHURCH OF Ireland has “no current plans” to follow the example of Anglican church leaders in England and introduce a devil-free version of the traditional baptism service. In the new wording, currently being-road tested in 400 parishes across the water, parents and godparents are being asked if they “reject evil, and all its many forms, and all empty promises”. In the traditional version, they are asked if they “reject the devil and all rebellion against God”.The move follows a motion brought to the church’s General Synod from the a group of clergy in Liverpool, who sought to alter the baptism service to include “culturally appropriate and accessible language”.According to a spokesperson for the Church of England, the motion specifically “requested new additional materials which would not replace or revise the current Baptsim service, but would be available for use as alternatives to three parts of the service”. The trial language is being used in a selected number of parishes until April.A spokesperson for the Church of Ireland told TheJournal.ie there were no plans in train to change the wording of services here, as the language was set down in the Book of Common Prayer.Rejection of the devil is also a component of Catholic baptism ceremonies. Parents and godparents are typically asked if they reject Satan, “all of his works and all his empty promises”.Read: Euromillions denounced as ‘the Devil’s work’ as website is hackedRead: Did you see the fireball that broke up over Ireland last Friday evening? read more

Early Friday Aug 28 police responded to six incidents involving vehicular break-ins as well as two separate reports of stolen vehicles Thursday night. Areas of the reported car break-ins included: Grace Bay Village, Kew Town and The Market Place. Moreover, the reports of the stolen vehicles took place at different locations. One vehicle stolen from a Richmond Commons address on Thursday Aug 27 but has since been recovered on Friday morning behind the Rugby Field; while the other vehicle was reportedly stolen from Kishco’s parking lot on Leeward Highway that vehicle has since been recovered on Friday at The Market Place. Police say both stolen vehicles were reportedly “hot-wired”. In an effort to reduce and diminish this wave of vehicular crimes, the RTCIPF is encouraging the public to avoid leaving your cars running, even if only for a few minutes. It is also recommended to keep cars locked and if possible install a car alarm, as this would make it more difficult and ultimately deter someone from breaking in. Other ideas to prevent vehicular break in include: parking in well-lit busy areas if possible and close to buildings with windows, taking your keys with you when going in to pay at convenience stores or fuel stations, also, avoid parking in between larger vehicles, and disconnecting the battery or removing the electronic ignition fuse when going out of town. For more information on Crime Reports and additional crime prevention tips visit the Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police Force website or Facebook page. And finally police are still appealing to anyone with information about these vehicular crimes to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: www.crimestoppers.tc. Sharon Crouch didn’t realize just how much work went into creating a memorial run and fundraiser until she created one in honor of her son, Jordan Crouch.Jordan, who graduated from Skyview High School in 2000, died of heart valve failure on Jan. 2, 2010 at age 28. He had a strong love of charity and community service projects, and his family created the Jordan Crouch Memorial 5K Walk/Run to fund a scholarship in his name at Seattle Pacific University, where he graduated in 2004. The run helped somewhat to create the scholarship, but after four years, it just isn’t making enough to keep it going, she said. So this will be the last year.“It’s really been tough going as far as trying to get community support,” Sharon said. “We’ve had some great sponsors, but we really hoped it would take off more than it did.”The run has generally had about 100 participants each year, about 40 of whom are family members, she said.“There are just so many other events we’re competing with out there,” Sharon said. “So we thought we’d take the money that we spent putting this together and just increase our own donation to the scholarship.” read more

New York: A gargantuan heat wave hunkered down over the central and eastern United States on Saturday, sending residents to cooling centers and inflicting on Washington a heat index of 106 degrees F (41 C) with even steamier conditions in the forecast. “It’s pretty hot right now from the Plains states all the way through the Mississippi Valley to the East Coast,” said Alex Lamers, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center. D-backs president Derrick Hall: Franchise ‘still focused on Arizona’ Well that didn’t take long. Just a day after the Baltimore Ravens said they will be cutting tight end Todd Heap, someone has already connected the dots between him and the Arizona Cardinals. The culprit is ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, who Tweeted out that he wouldn’t be surprised to see the tight end playing at University of Phoenix Stadium this season. read more
