NEW YORK — Tennis great Martina Navratilova proposed to her girlfriend on the big screen of Arthur Ashe Stadium between the U.S. Open men’s semifinals.Navratilova popped the question to Julia Lemigova in the Tennis Channel suite Sept. 6, drawing a loud cheer from the crowd.“I was very nervous,” Navratilova said later. “It came off. She said yes. It was kind of an out-of-body experience. You’ve seen people propose at sporting events before, in movies, in real life. Here it was happening to me. It was like I was watching myself do it.”The 57-year-old Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, a mark she shares with Chris Evert. Serena Williams will try to match it in the Sept. 7 women’s final.Navratilova said somebody suggested she propose during a changeover in the first match between Kei Nishikori and Novak Djokovic, but she didn’t want to disturb the players in any way.The only problem was that Navratilova was later scheduled to play a “Champions” doubles match with Jana Novotna against Tracy Austin and Gigi Fernandez. She tried unsuccessfully to get the start postponed without telling anybody why, so she was fretting that the Nishikori-Djokovic match would go five sets. Fortunately, it ended in four. After the triumph in her personal life, Navratilova was also victorious in doubles. When Navratilova walked into the locker room to get ready for the match, Austin didn’t know anything about what had just happened. The two chatted for a few minutes before Navratilova mentioned the proposal in passing.Austin then made her re-enact the whole thing.Navratilova said she and Lemigova would prefer to get married in Florida, where they live. A federal judge ruled last month that the state’s ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional, but Florida officials are appealing.Navratilova reminisced about her 1981 U.S. Open finals loss to Austin, when the fans gave her a long ovation as the runner-up, as the first time she felt accepted as a newly-minted American citizen and a gay woman.Thirty-three years later, gay couples can marry in 19 states and the District of Columbia, and Navratilova’s proposal got another big cheer from the U.S. Open crowd.TweetPinShare0 Shares

TweetPinShare0 Shares NEW YORK (AP) — Gio Gonzalez chuckled when asked to explain his success at Citi Field. “It’s New York. It’s a beautiful city. It’s got great food,” he said.Gonzalez struck out nine in seven crisp innings on one of his favorite mounds, outpitching Jonathon Niese to lead the Washington Nationals over the New York Mets 1-0 May 2.Michael Taylor drove in the only run with an infield single, and Washington won for the 16th time in its last 18 games in Queens. Ian Desmond snapped an 0-for-29 slump with two hits and threw out a runner at the plate.Gonzalez (2-2) gave up six hits, walked two and even made a diving play on a slow grounder, rebounding nicely after he was hit hard April 26 in a loss at Miami. The left-hander improved to 6-1 with a 1.66 ERA in nine starts at Citi Field.“The weather’s amazing. The airport’s awesome,” he said.Aaron Barrett and Matt Grace combined on a perfect eighth, and Drew Storen worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save.Niese (2-2) pitched in traffic all night but also went seven innings. He allowed nine hits and one walk in a hard-luck loss as New York fell to 11-2 at home this season.“It was just a great battle all the way to the end,” Gonzalez said.Niese has yielded one earned run in four of his five starts this year, but the left-hander has lost his last four outings against Washington.“Anytime you lose it stinks, but especially when a guy gives you an effort like that and pitches as well as he did. You feel like you let him down a little bit,” Mets cleanup hitter Michael Cuddyer said. With one out in the first, Juan Lagares tried to score from first base on Lucas Duda’s long double into the left-field corner. Because of the way the Citi Field stands hug the foul lines, Mets third base coach Tim Teufel appeared to have a hard time getting a good view of Jayson Werth chasing the ball.Teufel waved Lagares home, and he was thrown out on a strong relay from Desmond at shortstop. With Cuddyer due up next, it was a costly decision for New York.“Once in a while you have to make them make a play,” Mets Manager Terry Collins said. “He made a great throw.”Gonzalez retired Daniel Murphy with two runners in scoring position to end the inning. The only other time the Mets advanced a runner past first base was in the fifth, when Duda hit an inning-ending grounder with men on second and third.Washington had chances all night but scored the lone run in the second.Desmond threw his hands in the air after ending his hitless skid by grounding a single that caromed off second base. Danny Espinosa followed with a single, Gonzalez advanced both runners with a sacrifice, and Desmond scored on Taylor’s sharp grounder that squirted out of the glove of a diving Murphy at third base.“Yeah, always good to get hits,” Desmond said. “But more importantly, win the game. That’s really the object at hand.”(MIKE FITZPATRICK, AP Baseball Writer)

Motorola India has slashed the prices of the Moto X4 and Moto E5 Plus ahead of the upcoming festive season. Both the phones now come at more attractive prices than ever before and should be worth considering if you find yourself at a Moto Hub or mobile retail store in India. The new pricing of the Moto X4 was first reported last week courtesy Mumbai retailer Mahesh Telecom, but Motorola has now confirmed it. It also comes soon after Motorola announced the Motorola One Power in India at Rs 15,999.The Moto E5 Plus, which was launched earlier this year, will now be available at Rs 10,999. We noticed that the new pricing of the E5 Plus is not reflected on e-commerce platform Amazon India, which means you will only be able to purchase it at this price through offline channels. Meanwhile, two variants of the Moto X4 have received price cuts. The 3GB and 4GB RAM variants can now be found for Rs 13,999 and Rs 15,999, respectively. The 3GB option will be paired with 32GB of internal storage while the 4GB variant will come with 64GB of inbuilt storage. The Moto X4 is now at a pretty affordable price considering it was launched starting at Rs 20,999. The company also launched a 6GB option earlier this year at Rs 24,999. While the company hasn’t announced a price cut for this variant, you can avail it for under Rs 20,000 on Amazon India.Launched last year, the Moto X4 highlights an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance and the new pricing makes it the cheapest phone with this certification. The device brings a glass and metal design similar to the Moto G6. It sports a traditional 5.2-inch FHD screen and is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 630 chipset with Adreno 508 GPU. The phone ships with Android 7.1.1 Nougat but it can be upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo.advertisementAs for the Moto E5 Plus, the new pricing is not a significant drop but still an attractive one for a budget device. It brings a more updated design language compared to the Moto X4 with a 6-inch HD+ (720×1440) IPS LCD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The big highlight here is the massive 5,000mAh battery inside the device that should take you through two days on a single charge. The phone is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 430 chipset, which is coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Both the phones support 4G VoLTE and dual SIM cards.ALSO READ: Moto E5 Plus quick review: Big on battery and display but is that enough

It is quite typical for Honor to be among the first brands to launch a new smartphone in India. Last year in January, Honor launched the Honor 9 Lite and Honor View10. The company will now launch their successors this month, called the Honor 10 Lite and Honor View 20. We went hands-on with the Honor 10 Lite last week, and this week we take a look at the Honor View 20, which is arguably Honor’s most ambitious flagship smartphone to date. The Honor View 20 sees a major bump in design and hardware compared to its predecessor. It brings a number of firsts for the company including a punch-hole display which is all set to become the big trend this year, a 48MP rear camera and a Kirin 980 chipset with Dual NPU, among other things. There’s plenty of interesting things on offer here, so we take a quick look at what consumers can expect. Here’s our initial impressions of the Honor View 20 before it launches in India on November 29.The View 20 is definitely a “take notice” smartphone, more so than the View10. It ditches the metal unibody design and goes for a glass and metal combination instead. There is a 3D curved glass on the back that seamlessly meets the aluminium frame. The glass is glossy, but unlike any other glass-backed phone we have seen. This is because Honor has incorporated a V-shaped pattern on the rear panel through a nano-coating process that runs down the back when you look at it at certain angles. The unit I received was Blue, which looks a little too loud for my taste, but there’s no doubt it’s an attractive and unique look that should take take your fancy.advertisement Honor’s new flagship feels pretty substantial in the hand. It is on the heavier side of things, but the weight is pretty balanced and the device as whole feels pretty solid. The volume and power buttons on the right side have a pleasant clicky sound to them. Notably, the View 20 retains the headphone jack which can be seen on the top. The bottom side of the frame sees a Type-C port and a single speaker grille. The biggest talking point about the View 20 is the cutout on the top left corner of the display which houses a single selfie camera. Honor is calling this the AllView display. The View 20 is actually the world’s first smartphone to sport a hole in the display – it was announced on December 10 in Hong Kong just hours before the Galaxy A8s. The circular cutout is about 4.5mm in diameter. A lot of mainstream brands will be employing this sort of hole in the display this year, be it on the right corner or the left corner. This is supposed to be the next best option for removing the notch, if companies are unwilling to go with a slider mechanism. The big question will be whether the hole in the display is actually better than a notch. Over the past one year, my eyes have gotten used to notches, both wide and waterdrop notches. So, the cutout does take a while to get used to. In my brief interaction with the phone, the hole does stick out like a sore thumb on a white background. But it is much easier to ignore if the background is dark. The notifications will be stacked next to the cutout, so it looks fairly optimised at first glance. I will have more to say about the punch-hole and just how distracting it is after playing a few games, watching some videos and operating some popular apps like WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter.Apart from the cutout and a very thin chin bezel, the View 20 is pretty much all display. You get a 6.4-inch FHD+ (2310×1080) display with a screen-to-body ratio that’s over 90 per cent and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. This is a pretty immersive screen on first look with deep and vibrant colours that could trick you into believing its an OLED display, when it is actually an LCD panel. The display has a pixel density of 398ppi and brightness levels look decent. This is a tall screen that will make one-handed use challenging.Under-the-hood, the Honor View 20 gets a flagship Kirin 980 chipset which is the same processor that powers the Mate 20 Pro. This is paired with 6GB of RAM as the base variant, which is plenty of memory to help with your multitasking needs. And if that’s not enough, Honor may just launch an 8GB RAM variant of the View 20 as well. As expected, the View 20 flies out of the box. Browsing through the UI, opening and loading apps and the animations were snappy. There was no lag or stuttering at all, but we can only know this for sure after putting the View 20 through intensive workload.advertisementThe View 20 also keeps things pretty traditional as it goes with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor which is absolutely snappy, rather than an in-display sensor. It also gets an equally fast facial recognition feature as well. Now, the View 20 does run Android Pie out-of-the-box. This is layered with Magic UI on top as Honor moves away from EMUI. Like EMUI, Magic UI is still pretty heavily layered so there is very little of Android Pie that is actually visible. Magic UI looks pretty similar to EMUI 9, but Honor expects it to gradually change in the future. App icons look more uniform now and there’s generally a lot more colour to be found. The Settings menu is fairly populated. You have the option to hide the camera cutout under the Notch option in Display. This will create a black bar across the top of the display so that you don’t visibly see the cutout. There is also have Digital Balance which is essentially the Pie-based feature called Digital Wellbeing. As for the cameras, the Honor View 20 is the company’s first phone to come with a 48MP rear camera sensor. That’s a lot of megapixels in a smartphone, promising to deliver ultra crisp pictures. This is a Sony IMX586 sensor with a pixel size of 0.8 microns. Through pixel binning technology, the pixel size can get up to 1.6 microns. So you have the option to shoot in 48MP resolution or 12MP which uses pixel binning to offer detail and clarity. I captured a few pictures indoors and in daylight and the results with the 12MP resolution were quite pleasing. There is also a secondary ToF (Time of Flight) camera that is used for depth sensing. The front camera which rests beneath the cutout is a 25MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. The few selfies I captured in daylight looked crisp, but I will have more to say about the cameras and how they perform in various lighting conditions. The Honor View 20 also gets a beefy 4,000mAh battery, which should be enough to take you through the day and then some. The EMUI software also offers two battery saving features that will help you get the most out of the battery. The phone supports Huawei’s SuperCharge fast charging and you get a 40W charger with the box.The Honor View 20 is clearly a few steps up from its predecessor and there is a lot that is new and unique here to tickle your fancy. This is the first time we are checking out a phone with a hole in the display so it will be interesting to see whether this is the way to go to remove the notch. The phone looks quite attractive and a rumoured price tag of around Rs 35,000 should set this up nicely against the OnePlus 6T. Stay tuned for our full review of the Honor View 20 after the phone goes official on January 29.advertisementALSO READ | Honor View 20 with 25MP front camera set to launch in India on January 29

Australia Women’s cricket captain Meg Lanning on Saturday highlighted the importance of Ashes(series between England and Australia) and said she was extremely jealous on missing out on the series last time.”I was really jealous sitting on the sidelines during that last series, it’s a really great thing to be a part of,” cricket.com.au quoted Lanning as saying. No women cricketer has more ODI centuries than Lanning, but she is yet to pass the score of fifty in Test format. She has played three Test matches in her career so far and her highest score till date is 48. “We want to play good cricket no matter what format it is and it is harder in Test matches because we just don’t play it enough to really understand what our strengths and weaknesses are,” Lanning said.”But at the end of the day, I think as long as we stick to the style of play that has treated us well (in all formats) over the last 18 months, that’s the best way to approach it. I don’t think you can change too much. We still want to play a good brand of cricket and continue to move the game forward as much as we can,” she added.Lanning was exceptional for Australia in the 2015 Ashes campaign. Australia defeated England on their home soil for the first time since 2001. She scored knocks of 104 and 85 respectively to give Australia early lead in the series, and the team sealed the series in the penultimate T20I in Hove.advertisement”That game at Hove, where we actually won the Ashes, nobody could think could happen, that’s one of the best game’s I’ve been a part of. It just sort of showed that we had as a group and the special nature of it,” Lanning said. The Ashes begins on 2 July when Australia takes on England in the first ODI at Leicester. Also Watch:

New Delhi: The government’s rollback of enhanced surcharge on select investors, announced as part of a series of measures to boost the economy last week, has not created a differential regime between FPIs and domestic investors, CBDT said in statement on Wednesday. This differential regime existed even prior to the 2019 Budget, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said, adding that it was, therefore, not the creation of the Finance (No 2) Act, 2019, or the announcement made by the Finance Ministry last week. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscal Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday announced the withdrawal of enhanced surcharge on short-term and long-term capital gains earned by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and domestic investors. CBDT said, following the announcement, the perception that the withdrawal of enhanced surcharge has created the differential regime in certain sections of media is completely misplaced. It stated that even before Budget 2019, income arising from derivatives for the domestic investors including AIF category-III as well as for foreign investors who are not FPIs, has been treated as business income and not as capital gains, and taxed at applicable normal income tax rates. Also Read – Food grain output seen at 140.57 mt in current fiscal on monsoon boost Hence, the announce by the Finance Minister last week has not created a differential regime between FPIs and domestic investors, it said. In case of FPIs, Income Tax Act, 1961 (the Act) contains special provisions [section 115AD read with section 2(14) of the Act] for taxation of income from derivatives, it explained. Under this regime, income of FPIs arising from derivatives was treated as capital gains and liable for special rate of tax as per section 115AD of the Act, it said.

7 September 2010Two years after the Nepalese Government abolished the system of indentured labour that was prevalent in the country’s west, many of the freed agricultural workers still live in miserable conditions, United Nations agencies have reported, calling on authorities to step up the pace of reform to help the labourers. The Office for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR-Nepal), the UN International Labour Organization (ILO) and Nepal’s National Dalit Commission said the so-called Haliyas – or bonded labourers – in the country’s Mid and Far western regions often have no access to food, shelter, clothing, health care or education.Haliya women and children are particularly badly affected, the three organizations said in a joint statement issued on Sunday in the capital, Kathmandu, to mark the second anniversary of the abolition of the bonded labour system by the Government. The statement noted that the Government plans to draft a law banning the practice of bonding Haliyas and undertake a survey of the freed labourers, describing it as a “crucial step towards their rehabilitation.“However, we are deeply concerned over the slow progress on the implementation of the five-points agreement signed two years ago, including the annulment of debts, formation of a separate Haliya Commission and distribution of land to the freed Haliyas.”The statement stressed that “meaningful rehabilitation of the freed Haliyas” is consistent with Nepal’s interim constitution, its international treaty obligations and a 2007 ruling from the South Asian country’s Supreme Court.“The failure of the Government to fulfil its commitment in a timely manner will put the freed Haliyas at risk of falling back into the vicious cycle of exploitation once again and further compound their misery also on account of their Dalit [low caste] identity.” read more
Some 38 per cent of all mothers across Canada – with the exception of Quebec – are excluded from maternity or parental benefits under the federal Employment Insurance (EI) program, new Brock-led research has found. In contrast, only 10 per cent of mothers in Quebec are excluded from that province’s Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP), formed in 2006 when Quebec exited the federal EI parental leave program, says the research. And, mothers in households earning $30,000 and above receive disproportionately higher access to benefits than lower-income households, especially under the federal EI, according to the research.“Our findings quantify the extent to which Canada’s two labour market-based parental leave benefit programs unevenly reproduce and exacerbate class inequality,” says the study, tiled “Parental-leave rich and parental-leave poor: Inequality in Canadian labour market based leave policies.”The research, led by Lindsey McKay, postdoctoral fellow in The Department of Sociology and a Research Associate with Brock’s Social Justice Research Institute, set out to examine if and how social class – defined by family income – determines mothers’ access to maternal or parental leave under the EI and QPIP programs. The team – which includes Brock’s Canada Research Chair in Gender, Work and Care Andrea Doucet and Sophie Mathieu, lecturer at the Université de Montréal – examined statistics from the national Employment Insurance Coverage Survey, compiled by Statistics Canada.“We point out a divide between Quebec and the rest of Canada, and between households with different incomes, in terms of parental leave benefits in the first year of an infant’s life,” the research team concludes.“The implication is that where parents live in Canada, and how much they earn, matters to whether and how care work is supported.”“Quebec has the most generous parental leave in North America,” says Mathieu. “In Québec, a woman who earns minimum wage ($10.75 in 2016) would only need to work 186 hours to qualify to receive QPIP benefits, instead of 600 in the rest of Canada. QPIP thus represents an extension in coverage to persons not covered by the EI.”Mathieu, who had her first child in 2008, did not qualify to receive benefits because she was a doctoral student. Her scholarship funding did not count as insurable earnings. However, her partner was entitled to use not only parental leave but also one unique feature of QPIP: up to five weeks of paid paternity leave for fathers. McKay did not qualify in 2011 when she gave birth to twins because she was a student and had a high-risk pregnancy.Lead author McKay stresses the importance of maternity and parental leave programs.“It’s a major asset that really helps you have some financial security in the first year of a child’s life,” she says. “For many families, this is a key buffer against poverty.”The research has encouraged parents to share their experiences about being excluded from EI benefits. “Many are students who have to drop their studies and scramble to find work, or more hours at work, to try to reach 600 hours. They return to work soon after the birth only to pay into EI again. One of the worst stories was of excluded parents who were evicted because they couldn’t pay rent.” McKay says.“It’s stressful enough to have a newborn baby to care for,” she recalls.Doucet, who is a Professor of Sociology and Women’s and Gender Studies, says the team’s study extends the scope of international parental leave research dominated by research on the exclusion of fathers. “We now need greater attention to class differences to advance our understanding of exactly who is excluded from this very vital support system for children and their families.”The study notes that the annual Employment Insurance Coverage Survey by Statistics Canada used in the study excludes residents of Canada’s three territories and Indigenous people living on First Nations reserves.Doucet refers to a recent Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives report (CCAP) recommending that poverty statistics – including data on key policies and programs – should be published to give a clear picture of how Indigenous children are affected.“What we have uncovered is just the tip of the iceberg,” says Doucet. “We support the CCAP recommendation to extend annual government surveys to reserves and the territories to provide critical poverty and income data – including access to maternity and parental leave benefits – for Indigenous mothers and fathers.”The team’s research comes at a time when the federal government is reviewing maternity and parental leave provisions. McKay, Mathieu and Doucet’s study shows that proposed changes will have no impact on parents and children in greatest need of support. In fact, they would only widen the rich-poor divide.McKay and Doucet are two of four Canadian academics in the International Network on Leave Policies and Research.“Parental-leave rich and parental-leave poor: Inequality in Canadian labour market based leave policies” was published the September, 2016 Journal of Industrial Relations. read more

Just four minutes later, Edwards followed that up with a second goal, giving Ohio State a 2-0 advantage with 83 minutes still remaining in the game.Indiana (6-9-4, 2-6-3 Big Ten) did not allow the Buckeyes to celebrate for long as the Hoosiers struck back with their first goal in the 41st minute on a collected finish by redshirt junior forward Annelie Leitner, who had recently been summoned off the bench. That goal would be the final one of the first half.Ohio State outshot Indiana 13 to six in the first half. Both teams finished with one corner kick a piece. The tide had turned in Indiana’s favor heading into halftime, but an experienced Ohio State offensive attack that came out punching in the opening frame of the game did not stop as the second half progressed. The Buckeyes finished the game with 24 shots on goal when the game ended compared to 11 by Indiana. Hoosiers goalkeeper Bethany Kopel recorded eight saves, as opposed to her Buckeye counterpart Devon Kerr, who recorded four saves during the game. Edwards gave credit to her teammate, midfielder Nikki Walts, for giving her a chance to net a pair of goals by assisting on both plays.“She’s one of those players who always gets the job done.” Edwards said. “She’s really good at spacing and knowing where to put the ball.” Head coach Lori Walker-Hock said she was proud of the way her team played against a tough Indiana team to claim the Big Ten outright title. “First of all, no team in the Big Ten ever rolls over, and Indiana stepped up tonight and they really fought, they fought to the end” Walker-Hock said. Ohio State advanced to 14-3-1 in the Big Ten while Indiana fell to 6-9-4. Ohio State clinched the program’s second Big Ten Championship title and first since 2010. The Buckeyes will host Iowa Sunday at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament. read more

In picture: Yoga guru Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved MD Balkrishna in New Delhi on May 4, 2017.IANS File PhotoIn the worst performance since 2013, homegrown FMCG brand Patanjali Ayurveda has registered a slowdown in sales and profits for the financial year ended March 2018. The reasons attributed to the dip in sales and profits include stiff competition with many rivals companies, mostly multinationals, the introduction of natural and herbal products as well as its own distribution issues post-GST rollout.Referring to the financial source from research platform Tofler, Economic Times reported that in the FY2018, Patanjali tanked 10 per cent to Rs 8,135 crore as against Rs 9,030 crore in 2016-17. Another provisional data sourced by CARE Ratings shows that Patanjali’s net profit fell more than 50 per cent at Rs 529 crore in FY18 from Rs 1,190 crore during the same period a year ago.The numbers are concerning for Baba Ramdev led Patanjali as this is the worst performance since FY2013. It is to be noted that the Haridwar based company has doubled its annual sales every year from FY13 to FY17.A report by CARE rating blamed the company’s inability to adjust to the changes introduced by the goods and services tax (GST). The report highlighted that “The decline in turnover was primarily because of the company’s inability to timely adapt to the GST regime and develop infrastructure and supply chain.””Further, there was a sharp decline in its profitability margins, with the profit before interest, lease, depreciation and tax (PBILDT) margin declining from 18.7 per cent in FY17 to 11.9 per cent in FY18 on account of increased overheads due to ongoing expansions and majorly due to growing selling and distribution expenses,” it further added. However, some of the other analysts blamed its distribution strategy for the slowdown. They highlighted the company’s strategy to have separate distributors for different business verticals such as staples, personal care and biscuits among others which eventually created issues in the supply chain. An investor note by IIFL Institutional Equities said: “Growth slowdown in Patanjali is a direct result of poor management of trade channels and lack of a coherent advertising strategy. Splitting distributors according to product categories has also complicated retailer servicing.”Moreover, the competitors also regained the lost market share in the recent times which affected Patanjali’s sales.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said spending money on education sector is a great investment for the future, not an expense.”I never see spending money on education as an expense, I think it’s an investment,” the prime minister said. She said this while distributing the Prime Minister Gold Medal Award at a ceremony organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) at the Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), reports UNB.Sheikh Hasina said public universities are statutory bodies but “more than 90 per cent of their expenditures– no, not 90 per cent– in fact, 100 per cent expenditures are borne by the government… what the development is needed we do that from the government.”She said spending money on education means building the future generation which will be helpful in materialising the dream of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to make the country a ‘Golden Bengal’.The premier said the students will help continue the country’s march forward initiated by the government. “Make sure the country never steps back.”Presided over by UGC chairman professor Abdul Mannan, the function was addressed, among others, by education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, secretary of secondary and higher education division of the ministry Md Sohorab Hossain and UGC member professor Dil Afroza Begum.Israt Jahan Pia of Jagannath University and Sajan Dhar of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology spoke on behalf of the gold medal recipients.Earlier, the prime minister handed over the gold medals among 163 talented students of different public and private universities of the country for achieving the highest marks/CGPA in their respective faculties. The Prime Minister Gold Medal was introduced in 2005 in a bid to encourage the talented university students.Ministers, advisers to the prime minister, national professors, former UGC chairmen, secretaries of different ministries, UGC members, vice-chancellors of public and private universities, educationists, high officials from Prime Minister’s Office and UGC and parents and guardians of the awardees were, among others, present on the occasion.

Credit: Israel Antiquities Authority In the same cave, the hikers also found an etching of a cross, a symbol that has been used by Christians to express their faith for thousands of years. How the two etchings came to exist in such close proximity is a mystery, though Ganor notes they likely were made hundreds of years apart by people hiding in the caves for very different reasons. Near both of the etchings was yet another etching—one depicting a key, which has not been studied well enough to reveal its possible identity or meaning. Ganor called the discovery an exciting find and hinted that there may be other etchings involved, as well—a team has been assembled to study the caves, though the actual site is being kept hidden to prevent amateur enthusiasts from causing damage. Also, interestingly, the menorah etching featured seven branches (three on either side and one in the middle for lighting) rather than the nine commonly used today. This, Ganor pointed out, suggests that the menorah etching was likely created during the time of the Second Temple, when candelabra were used to light the temple, from approximately 516 BCE until 70 CE, when it was destroyed. In modern times, followers of the Jewish faith light the eight small candles on either side of a menorah from the candle in the middle as part of a Hanukkah ceremony to commemorate the restoration of the Temple in Jerusalem.
